A grant scheme aimed at health and safety initiatives for young workers and women has been reopened.

SafeWork SA is offering funding up to $25,000 for health and safety initiatives supporting young workers and women in the workplace through the 2021 Augusta Zadow Awards.

The annual awards were established in recognition of the efforts of Augusta Zadow, who in 1895 became South Australia’s first female inspector of factories. She played a crucial role in securing better conditions for employees, particularly women and children.

Businesses and individuals are invited to submit their applications with their ideas for research, education or solutions, using the award grants to develop a work health and safety initiative, meet the cost of further education or research.

Successful applicants must propose a project that will benefit women and young people by

providing a solution to a work health and safety issue, and/or significantly improving health and safety through research and further education.

SafeWork SA Executive Director, Martyn Campbell said the 2021 Augusta Zadow Award grants will take SafeWork SA’s investment into health and safety innovation and research to date to nearly $325,000.

“The Augusta Zadow Awards continue the legacy of Augusta Zadow in improving health and safety for women and young workers,” he said.

“It is part of SafeWork SA’s ongoing commitment to support future workplace safety through practical outcomes and evidence-based research. We want to encourage people to think about doing safety differently in order to benefit the wider community.”

Applications for the 2021 grants will remain open until Monday 16 August 2021.

Successful applicants will be announced as part of National Safe Work Month events for October.
