Investigations have been launched after a Queensland man working as a power meter reader was mauled to death by dogs.

Energex meter reader Kane Minion, 42, was killed when two dogs attacked him over the weekend.

Emergency services found Mr Minion unconscious in the front yard of the property with critical injuries. He died at the scene. The owners of the dogs were not at home at the time.

Logan City Council says it had no prior indication that the dogs at the property were a problem, but the dogs had reportedly been registered with Energex as a warning to meter readers.

Police found three dogs at the address, two which were impounded by the local council.

Safe Work Australia has been notified, and police say they are preparing a report for the coroner.

“Our hearts go out to the family of the deceased male from Marsden and it's also a difficult time for the owners who are attached to their dogs at that residence,” Acting Inspector Gary Worrell said.

“The matter has already been reported to Work Safe and they'll run a parallel investigation with us as well.

“Energex has a very good system where they email and communicate with the owners of known places where dogs are used for the protection of family homes or where they know there's aggressive dogs.

“I believe that is the case before a contract goes to one of these residences or businesses so the dogs can be put away.”

Mr Minion had spent seven years working for Downer’s Skilltech and was working as a contractor for Energex at the time.

“Downer is extremely saddened by this tragic loss,” a company spokesperson said this week.

“Kane has worked with Downer’s Skilltech’s metering business for more than seven years, and was a popular member of the team,” they said.

“Downer extends our deepest sympathies to Kane’s family, and we will support them through this incredibly difficult time.”

The two impounded dogs are a bandog bullmastiff cross and a Rhodesian ridgeback cross. Experts say it is unlikely that they attacked purely because of their breed.
