Federal authorities have issued new resources to protect ‘gig economy’ workers.

The gig economy - styles of work that tend to be temporary, flexible and arranged through online services with little regulation - is a growing part of the workforce, with over 100 platforms operating within Australia.

This week, Safe Work Australia has published a fact sheet about workers’ compensation and the gig economy.

The fact sheet was developed to encourage gig workers to enquire into their workers’ compensation entitlements and to inform platforms of the general obligations under workers’ compensation law for employers.

“Advice may vary between jurisdictions – so it’s important to contact the workers’ compensation authority in your state or territory for more specific information,” Safe Work Australia says.

The fact sheet is accessible here.
