Mining giant Woodside has responded to the death of a worker on one of its offshore gas platforms.

A workplace incident off Western Australia's northwest coast recently claimed the life of a gas rig employee.

The incident occurred at Woodside's North Rankin Complex, situated approximately 135 kilometres northwest of Karratha.

Woodside, an oil and gas company, confirmed the employee's death and expressed its condolences to the family and colleagues of the deceased.

Woodside CEO Meg O'Neill said; “This is a very sad day for the extended Woodside family, and I offer my deepest sympathy to our colleague's family, friends, and workmates. Any loss of life is heartbreaking”.

The worker was employed by one of Woodside's contractor companies, Vertech.

The cause of the incident is yet to be determined, but Woodside has pledged to thoroughly investigate the matter.

Liz Westcott, Woodside Energy's Executive Vice President of Australian Operations, said the company is committed to learning from the incident and implementing necessary changes to prevent such tragedies from recurring.

Authorities, including the WA Police and the National Offshore Petroleum Safety and Emergency Authority, are collaborating with Woodside in their investigation.

The Australian Petroleum Production & Exploration Association (APPEA) also expressed condolences and sympathies to those affected by the loss.

Woodside has extended support and counselling services to its employees and contractors, while Vertech Group is working closely with the authorities at the site.

This incident follows another recent occurrence at Woodside's Pluto plant, where workers experienced an audible release triggered by an internal combustion event.

While there were no confirmed injuries, one contractor sought medical attention for noise exposure.

Authorities are preparing a report on the gas rig worker's death.
