WorkSafe ACT has commenced an “intelligence-led inspection campaign”.

The effort is designed to address and mitigate the primary causes behind serious workers’ compensation claims within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT).

Under the leadership of the ACT’s Work Health and Safety Commissioner, Jacqueline Agius, WorkSafe ACT says it is taking a data-centric approach to identify and target high-risk sub-industries and mechanisms that contribute to severe workplace injuries.

“Using this data, we have developed a targeted inspection campaign that focuses on specific areas of non-compliance that is driving these serious injuries. We can then work to reduce the number of these injuries we see in the future,” Ms Agius said.

The campaign kicked off with 16 dedicated inspectors visiting various businesses within the car retailing sector across the ACT, scrutinising adherence to safety regulations against the backdrop of the most common injury causes, including mobile plant operations, manual tasks, and occupational violence.

Throughout the year, WorkSafe ACT is set to expand its reach, conducting comprehensive campaigns across different industries to not only assess compliance but also to refine safety data and, crucially, diminish the risk of harm to workers.

Ms Agius has called on all ACT businesses to proactively reassess their health and safety frameworks, especially at the outset of the new year.
