Hundreds of police are planning a protest outside WA Parliament to highlight what their union calls the State Government’s broken promises.

Up to 1000 off-duty officers will descend on Perth from around the state for a rally on August 8, where they will demand a 1.5 per cent pay rise.

WA’s Labor Government had supported their requested pay rise before it was elected, but now says it will offer a flat $1000 pay rise that leaves almost all police worse off.

“This [rally] will show the McGowan Government how incensed our members and the public are about the broken pay promise and the lack of any meaningful commitment to additional police officers,” WA Police Union president George Tilbury told The West Australian.

“Our members are fully aware of the State’s financial position.

“However, you don’t promise police one thing and then deliver something else.”

The protest is the next step in the union’s ongoing industrial campaign, which has already seen officers working to rule and issuing cautions instead of fines for minor traffic matters.

But Premier Mark McGowan is holding strong, saying in recent days that the state cannot afford more than the currently offered pay rise.

The union says it is coming up with more plans for industrial action.
