Brisbane bus drivers are expected to strike again, amid a long-running industrial dispute with management.

Bus drivers were joined by other council staff in a walk-off last week as part of an ongoing industrial dispute over pay and working conditions.

Rail, Tram and Bus Union (RTBU) secretary Tom Brown said two recent alleged assaults against drivers were evidence of union’s the concerns for members’ safety and security.

The RTBU has been at the negotiating table with the Brisbane City Council for months.

One of the major measures it is asking for is a move away from cash handling, which can often lead to altercations onboard.

The union also wants more security staff stationed on buses or following in vehicles, as well as the appointment of network officers that can detain and eject patrons.

“The council response has been that they are doing what they can,” Mr Brown said.

“They’re doing too little, too late. We want a rock solid commitment from them that they can’t back away from.”

Brisbane City Council has called for tougher sentences for people who assault bus drivers.
