On-the-spot fines will be issued for OHS breaches in the ACT, with new legislation to take place on Monday July 1.

Workplace safety laws will be overhauled to include more offences in the $3600 fine bracket, and place more responsibility for workers’ safety on the shoulders of employers.

Simon Corbell, Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations Minister, has confirmed that the ACT government is dedicated implementing all of the Getting Home Safely report recommendations.

The new schedule of fines is expected to remove some of the pressure on the state’s courts.

From next week safety inspectors will be authorised to issue on the spot fines for breaches including; failure to notify WorkSafe ACT of incidents, not providing first-aid equipment, personal protective equipment, training and instruction on the use of personal protective equipment, preparing a safe work method statement,failure to ensure a worker has undergone construction induction training and many other possible offences.
