All South Australian Government residential care workers will soon undergo psychological testing.

The tests come out of the recommendations made by Child Protection Systems Royal Commissioner Margaret Nyland after a two-year royal commission prompted by the abuse of vulnerable children in state care by paedophile Shannon McCoole, a former Families SA carer.

About 350 employees will undergo the assessment before being given the all-clear to work with vulnerable children.

The Nyland report admitted that psychological assessments will not alleviate all risk in recruiting staff to care for vulnerable children, but said they would improve on previous processes.

Public Service Association of SA has concerns about the testing – which includes a one-on-one session with a psychologist - and says it may be forced to lodge a dispute in the Industrial Relations Commission.

“We [do not have] enough detail around how the testing will be conducted,” general secretary Nev Kitchin said.

“For example, if somebody allegedly fails the test, how they can then challenge the test.

“If somebody ultimately fails the test and they then need to be relocated to another government department, how will that actually take place?”
