The Opportunity

The role of junior Technical Officer will be two-fold:

  1. assist in the development and subsequent support of the new Student Workshop Experience Facility (SWEF)
  2. assist the Senior Technical Officers in the support of the research equipment and laboratories within the department.

As the successful candidate you will be responsible for the general upkeep, maintenance and OHS aspects of the SWEF and the equipment within, which will consist predominantly of basic workshop tools and equipment. You will have the opportunity to work closely with the existing Technical Officers, under supervision of senior staff members, in assisting with the day to day running and upkeep of the department mechanical equipment. A penchant to build on your current basic technical skills is essential. On the job training and where applicable, industry training and licensing will be provided as required. With new technologies constantly evolving, especially that of 3D printing, the desire and ability to learn new skills and expand your knowledge is paramount.

An understanding and basic knowledge of Workshop OHS practices along with Chemical Safety, will be looked upon favourably, as will any experience of 3D printing, whether that be in the workplace or as a hobby. A current Victorian driver license is desirable along with the aspiration to expand this to Forklift, Boom Lift and Scissor Lift operation.

This position will be ideally suited to those who have recently completed, or will in the near future, a Certificate IV in Engineering or a 4th Year Apprenticeship.
