The Role
You will play a pivotal role in implementing and developing our repertoire of risk management and Work Health & Safety (WHS) tools and procedures. Help us promote an organisational culture where WHS matters are embedded in operating procedures throughout our business. You have an understanding of the various legislative and regulatory requirements in areas of WHS and workplace compliance relevant to a retail/wholesale business. You are business oriented and understand the importance of engaging/consulting with the various stakeholders and to become a valuable business partner.  Travel is a requirement of the position.

Duties for the role include:

  • Research and provide technical advice to the business (including keeping up to date on best practice & legal requirements) which will include legislation in Australia & New Zealand
  • identify areas for improvement or focus – prioritise, develop programs, provide training and assist our operation teams to implement them
  • Complete goals/projects according to pre-determined deadlines
  • Create/develop/conduct workshops for safety program topics such as, Incident analysis/prevention, safety policies/procedures, regulatory compliance, safety training as required by law, etc
  • Create/conduct training (eg. WHS, Risk Management)
  • Teach/communicate safety information to managers to be integrated into their daily operations
  • Review and update the risk management manual as required
  • Create reports to be used when reviewing workers’ compensation and incidents with locations and senior management, identifying exposures and training opportunities
  • Create and interpret adhoc reports
  • Write professional correspondence to regulatory agencies and senior management
  • Work with locations and senior management on regulatory citations and/or complaint letters as required
  • Provide locations and senior management compliance information for federal, state, local health/environmental regulations regarding equipment, facilities, and unsafe behaviours
  • Conduct serious Incident investigations and provide assistance to operations for regulatory visits / inspections
  • Safety Month – develop and implement the program annually
  • Conduct audits and provide reports to locations on a periodic basis
  • Development and implementation of environmental safety and procedures
  • Knowledge and understanding of legislative and regulatory compliance for WHS, risk management, disposal of chemical and handling of dangerous goods, risk assessments and other relevant areas for compliance
  • Record keeping – up to date and ensure documentation is filed correctly.

 Non-essential functions and tasks:

Assists in other areas of the department as necessary and assists in other departments of the company as necessary.

 The successful candidate will:

  • Completed graduate study towards a risk, safety or related field qualification
  • Have a background in retail or warehouse environments
  • Have a minimum of 3 years experience in a WHS role
  • Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Strong analytical skills, with ability to understand business objectives and independently develop the means to achieving goals and objectives
  • Multitasking with ability to prioritise
  • Use discretion and show independent judgement
  • Experience with computer applications and interfaces
  • Stay abreast of changes in regulations and technology 
  • Ability to act professionally in a crisis situation.
