The role

We are currently recruiting for a Safety Manager to join our Infrastructure Safety Team as we prepare to integrate some exciting projects over the next few years. The safety function within Infrastructure supports a 24 hour 7 day a week business with responsibility for providing professional and strategic advice in the areas of Occupational Health & Safety, Rail Safety and Environment. The core function of the position is not to just ensure compliance with relevant legislation but go beyond this by leading occupation specific improvement initiatives, and provide coaching and mentoring to employees in their obligations and responsibilities under relevant legislation and Metro policies.

The role will be responsible for managing a small and diverse team of professionals to lead a change in the way we do things. If successful, you will be tasked with providing ideas and solutions to assist in changing the safety culture of an established industry. Furthermore, you will be influencing operations to challenge the status quo and develop new ways of working while enjoying flexible working arrangements to maximise productivity and enjoying work-life balance. Role responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Developing and implementing both the Infrastructure Safety Strategy and OHS procedures based on approved MTM policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing the conduct hazard identification and risk reduction programs.
  • Overseeing audit inspection programme, undertake analysis and identify improvement initiatives for business implementation.
  • Overseeing incident management programme, undertake analysis and identify improvement initiatives for business implementation.
  • Initiating and organising education programs for all relevant members of staff in the areas of OHS.
  • Monitoring occupational health and safety (OHS) issues with due regard to legislative requirements, to meet or exceed expectations, industry best practices and proposed actions by government bodies and regulators.
  • Responding to ONRSR for requests for information.
About you

You will have proven knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act in relation to the Rail industry.

In addition to this you will have:

  • A tertiary qualification in Workplace Health and Safety or related field (mandatory)
  • Experience in Rail Operations, Construction, Mining or Aviation; or other high risk environments
  • Demonstrated experience of implementing safety management systems and continual improvement
  • Knowledge of Personnel Policy and Practices and the Code of Behaviour including Fair and Just Culture
