Senior OH&S Consultant

Role Context and Purpose:

The Senior Consultant OHS will play a key role in reviewing and establishing the Occupational Health Safety Management System (OHSMS) and supporting policies, procedures, and processes. This position will provide high-level advice and support to managers and staff at both organisational and operational levels on various health and safety matters.

Accountabilities:

  • Support OHSMS Redevelopment: Assist the Principal Consultant OHS in re-developing and implementing the OHSMS to enhance health and safety for the permanent and temporary workforce during major electoral events.
  • Policy Coordination: Coordinate the review and implementation of policies, procedures, and processes to drive early identification and resolution of OHS issues and risks.
  • Specialist Advice: Provide specialist advice to internal stakeholders on compliance activities, ensuring adherence to the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 and the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013, including monitoring for legislative changes.
  • Risk Assessment and Management: Support the assessment of OHS risks, identify, and manage these risks through innovative solutions.
  • OHS Committee Expert: Act as a subject matter expert on the OHS Committee and work programs associated with major events.
  • Educational Material Development: Partner with internal stakeholders to create OH&S focused educational and training material for head office staff and election appointees.
  • Operational Advice: Provide expert operational advice to senior management and key stakeholders, contributing to the creation of high-quality reports and briefs.
  • Stakeholder Relationships: Establish and maintain productive working relationships with key stakeholders

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Technical Knowledge: Expert understanding of relevant legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (2004) and the Workplace Injury Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 2013.
  • Policy Skills: Proven experience in the development, review, and implementation of policies, procedures, and programs.
  • Develop Capability: Proven experience in educating, training, and developing staff through the creation of educational materials and expert advice.
  • Project Delivery: Ability to translate strategies into programs or projects and define governance measures, roles, responsibilities, progress monitoring, and risk management.
  • Analytical and Problem-Solving: Strong analytical, conceptual, and problem-solving skills with the ability to provide innovative solutions and advice.
  • Communication: Excellent written and verbal communication skills that can relate to all levels of management, staff, and stakeholders.
  • Stakeholder Management: Highly developed interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse range of internal and external stakeholders.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within a public sector environment.
  • Tertiary qualification in OH&S or related field.
