Senior Lawyer, Prosecutions

WorkSafe is relocating its headquarters to Geelong by 2018, however, this position will remain in Melbourne.  The position is currently based at 222 Exhibition Street and may relocate to another Melbourne office in 2018.

WorkSafe’s Enforcement Group is responsible for monitoring and enforcing compliance with Victoria’s accident compensation and health and safety laws. The Enforcement Group has a team of criminal, administrative, occupational health and safety and compensation legal specialists.

About the role

This Senior Lawyer is primarily accountable for providing specialist legal advice to support health and safety enforcement and compensation prosecutions and providing advice on the conduct of investigations. 
• Provide strategic and timely expert oral and written advice to WorkSafe on complex legal and policy issues.
• Build and maintain effective working relationships with the key internal and external stakeholders. The incumbent must manage constructive relationships in a sensitive and potentially volatile environment.
• Mentor / Supervise the work performed by junior lawyers and paralegals.
• Assist in the formulation, development and implementation of guidelines, policies and strategies across the Enforcement Group as required.
• Identify and propose legislative, procedural or investigative reform where required.

Skills & experience

• Professional qualifications in law, including admission to practice as an Australian Lawyer (post admission experience required, 5 – 7 years).
• Demonstrated specialist knowledge of criminal law and evidence and procedures and occupational health and safety legislation.
• Demonstrated experience in the conduct of enforcement litigation and providing legal advice in a compliance and enforcement context.
• Demonstrated experience in conducting litigation with limited supervision.
• Demonstrated advocacy experience, particular in courts of summary jurisdiction.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
