Safe Places is a housing and intensive support service for children in care aged between 10 and 17 who are unable to be placed in foster families or group residential, generally due to high level or extreme support needs.

Safe Places for Children has a vacancy for a Workplace Health & Safety Officer based in our Woolloongabba office

Position Statement

The Workplace Health and Safety Officer is responsible for assisting the Safe Places team to actively create, promote and support a culture of safety and comply with WHS legislative requirements.

Permanent full-time position

Workplace Health & Safety Officer Role

  • Actively create, promote and support a culture of safety at Safe Places.
  • Conduct inspections to identify hazards or unsafe conditions and practices.
  • Assist with WHSQ inspectors if required.
  • Review and/or investigation of documentation of workplace incidents, make recommendations and monitor implementation.
  • Proactively identify risks, managing hazards, investigating incidents and providing appropriate reporting.
  • Ensure systems comply with WHS legislation.
  • Investigate WHS matters and promptly close out.
  • Liaise with WorkCover, Insurers and other stakeholders.
  • Actively assist in the injury and claims management process.
  • Certification of internal WHS investigations.
  • Assist in review, update and implementation of WHS policies and procedures in line with relevant legislation.
  • Researching existing (and new) jurisdictions in relation to legislative requirements for operations

Desirable requirements

  • Minimum 12 months experience in a similar role required.
  • Certificate IV or Diploma in Work Health and Safety or equivalent. 
  • RRTWC Cert IV/Diploma or equivalent will be highly regarded.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WHS Act and Regulations in relevant state or territory.
  • Basic knowledge of WHS Management Systems.
  • Experience in Workers Compensation, rehabilitation and return to work processes.

Essential Requirements

  • High level confidence with learning computer-based systems and programs including Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer skills and some Excel skills
  • High level interpersonal skills (approachable, diplomatic, sensitive, articulate)
  • High level written skills
  • Analytical skills and sound judgement
  • Requirement to undergo Departmental screening processes and possess a positive outcome
  • Compliance with Working with Children Card requirements for the state
  • Current Open Drivers’ License within the state you work in
