The Opportunity & Team

Bega has an exciting opportunity for a Lead Safety Advisor to join our Operational Excellence team in a safety leadership position, located at one of our Sydney facilities. You will manage a team of safety advisors across our sites and functions, providing mentoring and coaching, being a trusted advisor to the business. This role will be integral in improving safety performance in Bega, championing safety leadership and a positive safety culture by upholding appropriate safety standards in the workplace in line with Bega values and safety principles.

Reporting to our Group Manager - Safety, the Lead Safety Advisor is responsible for:

  • Promoting the vision of the organisation both internally and externally, and seeking continual improvements in safety.
  • Leading by example through the values, setting the standard for professional behaviour and excellent work habits that support a positive, progressive working environment.
  • Managing, coaching, and mentoring a team of safety advisors towards the achievement of their goals, and supporting the line managers of areas or functions that have been assigned to them.
  • Supporting and coaching leaders to understand compliance and improve risk perception, and ensuring leaders are appropriately investigating and reporting issues to regulators and escalating internally
  • Sharing best practice across the network to develop consistent and effective ways of working, and supporting sites to translate group safety standards into effective site procedures.
  • Being a trusted advisor to senior leaders as an escalation point and providing an independent view of safety performance and compliance to the Bega leadership team
  • Implement the strategic safety plan across their area of responsibility
  • Recommend appropriate resourcing requirements to support implementation of the strategic plan, managing risks to an acceptable level.

This role will be pivotal in helping to build a safety culture with a resounding common shared belief that all incidents are preventable.

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Qualification/s in Occupational Health & Safety or other relevant tertiary education, or extensive relevant industry experience
  • High levels of internal customer service as a support function and the ability to build effective relationships with stakeholders
  • The ability to build credibility and trust through effective communication skills
  • Leadership capability to lead a team across a large geographical area in varied industries (dairy, juice, FMCG) and experience with managing a small team of professionals
  • In depth practical knowledge of Australian occupational (work) health and safety management systems and standards
  • The ability to coach team members and line managers
  • Previously participated in a safety cultural transformation program
  • Excellent written and verbal English skills, and the ability to form working relationships at all levels of the business
  • Proven experience as a trusted safety advisor for all levels in a business
  • Ability to travel to our other sites as required to support the safety advisors
