The Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum has moved to boost safety practices in the Goldfields following the appointment of two new Mines Safety Inspectors.

Joining seven other inspectors in DMP’s Kalgoorlie office, Greg McCauley and Marshall Tigere will now encourage the region’s 80 operational mines to meet high safety standards.

With 23 years’ experience in the mining industry and a Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Greg has worked in mining and safety roles across Tasmania, South Australia and New South Wales.

Greg’s colleague Marshall echoed these comments, adding he planned to visit around 60 sites in 2012-13 – helping the Goldfields team reach its annual target of around 550 inspections.

The 24-year mining industry veteran said he was ready for the challenge of being an inspector in the Goldfields, where he previously worked as a minerals surveyor at Norilsk Nickel’s Black Swan Nickel Mine.

“I’ve also worked as an engineer in open pit and underground mines across Zimbabwe and Australia and had a stint in civil engineering surveying and minerals planning in England,” he said.

These latest appointments follow the recent recruitment of three Mines Safety Inspectors for the North West region and one for the South West – bringing DMP’s total number of inspectors to 63.
