The Tasmanian Parliament has passed legislation that will see the state join the country’s first National Rail Safety Regulator.

Tasmania and South Australia are now the first two states to join the NRSR, which from January next year will see all of the country’s railways come under a single regulator.

The NRSR forms part of a broad reform push that will see 23 state-based maritime, rail and heavy vehicle regulatory bodies reduced to just three.

The national rail safety regulator, headed up by Rob Andrews, will be based in Adelaide and have oversight of the country’s urban passenger rail networks and interstate freight operations.
