A recent education campaign may have helped reduce the number of truck drivers caught in a sweep of compliance enforcement this year.

Only nine drivers were caught in breach of heavy vehicle curfews in the first week of the sweep. VicRoads began the enforcement campaign last week; it is targeting truck drivers after existing truck curfews in Yarraville were extended.

VicRoads Regional Director Patricia Liew says the low number of breaches is proof the education campaign is working: “This is really encouraging as we have put a lot of energy into delivering the right result for the community and this shows that the message about curfews is being really strongly reinforced.”

“We’ve already completed the engineering stage, in which we made sure the signage is clear and meaningful, and positioned clearly. The education element was a great way to back this up and ensure that industry and the community are aware of our actions here,” Ms Liew said, “now the first stage of enforcement has been completed, we have a baseline from which to continue into the future.”

VicRoads will continue conducting one enforcement blitz per week for the next three months, monitoring truck traffic and enforcing curfews with a particular focus on roads with changed curfew conditions.
