Reports this week suggest ongoing concerns about PPE stocks for healthcare workers in Victoria.

According to the ABC, Victoria would “burn through the supplies in one week” if all healthcare workers were provided with the best protective equipment.

The claim is attributed to state's Chief Medical Officer Andrew Wilson.

It is alleged that mask shortages and lax guidelines mean proper ‘fit testing’ of masks for doctors and nurses is being rejected.

In some cases, workers who test or transport COVID-positive patients cannot access N95 masks at all.

Epidemiologist Mary-Louise McLaws told reporters; “It's unconscionable and it's unethical”.

The information comes from notes of briefings between Chief Medical Officer Andrew Wilson, Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) staff, unions and WorkSafe Victoria, which were allegedly leaked to the ABC.

Reports say DHHS had not “modelled” sufficient supplies earlier in the outbreak, leaving supply, not science, to determine PPE protocols.
