The South Australian Minister for Industrial Relations, Russell Wortley, has launched a series of DVDs that promote safety in South Australia’s mining and quarrying industries.

The Toolbox Safety DVD Series has been produced by the Mining and Quarrying Occupational Health and Safety Committee (MAQOHSC), a tripartite body established under the Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act 1986.

MAQOHSC employs two field officers who visit mines and quarries to provide services including:
o occupational health, safety and welfare (OHSW) training;
o plant and process safety;
o OHSW audits;
o OHSW management plans and procedures;
o training need analysis; and
o mentoring those with site safety responsibilities.

These field services are complemented by the funding of research and other activities, to identify preventative measures to improve the health and safety of workers in the mining and quarrying industries.

Mr Wortley said the DVD series will be particularly valuable to the smaller operators in these industries who may not always be able to devote the same resources to health and safety that the larger players can.

The DVD series can be ordered and/or downloaded free of charge via the MAQOHSC website, www.maqohsc.sa.gov.au.
