Research conducted by RMIT University shows that rate of injuries and death on construction sites are continuing to rise, despite advances in technology and safety measures.

The research conducted by the university shows that despite the construction industry accounting for 9 per cent of the total work force, it accounts for 11 per cent of all serious compensation claims.

In the 2008-09 period, the sector recorded more fatalities than any other industry and was twice the rate for the country’s workforce average.

RMIT’s Professor Helen Lingard said that intense competition coupled with downward price pressure was contributing to the industry’s poor workplace safety record.
