SafeWork SA says key non-compliance issues at Circus Rio have been addressed, following a series of injuries.

SafeWork SA has lifted four of the nine prohibition notices placed on Circus Rio after one performer was injured in an 8.5-metre fall from a hoop during a routine, suffering a broken wrist and two dislocated elbows.

This incident was followed days later by another involving stunt bike rider Bentang Sejarah, who broke his back in three places and suffered serious facial injuries when he struck a pole while airborne during a show.

The circus had been shut down by SafeWork SA and the City of Holdfast Bay.

Authorities conducted a comprehensive safety audit of the circus’ operations, leading to nine prohibition notices being issued, requiring the circus to rectify non-compliance with the Work Health & Safety legislation related to rigging, winches, electrical equipment and the licensing of high risk work.

Five prohibition notices remain in place, but the circus has been allowed to re-open. The remaining enforcements include prohibitions on working at heights and a ban on aerial performances such as the motorcycle show.
