Nominations have been called for South Australia’s Smoke-free Air Awards.

The SA Government’s awards are for organizations and businesses which have done the most to increase and promote smoke-free areas.

There are two award categories:

• Smoke-free Air Award – Excellence in Leadership and Innovation

For organisations which have shown exceptional leadership and innovation to reduce exposure to passive smoking, by encouraging and promoting smoke-free outdoor areas.

• Smoke-free Air Award - Excellence in the Provision of a Smoke-free Environment

For organisations which have demonstrated excellence in developing smoke-free outdoor areas.

Nominations close on 30 March 2012.

The SA Government’s Tobacco Control Strategy (2011-2016) has a target of reducing the proportion of the population exposed to passive smoking in confined public spaces by 20 percent by 2016.

The Government is amending existing regulations to ban smoking under covered public transport waiting areas, ban smoking within 10 metres of playgrounds and allow councils and other bodies to apply to have their outdoor area or event declared smoke-free.

Other recent measures to reduce smoking and the public’s exposure to smoke include: a ban on tobacco displays in shops, making publicly funded events 100 percent smoke-free outdoors by 2014 and ensuring all Government premises will be smoke-free by 2015. There is also a target for 100 percent smoke-free outdoor eating and drinking in pubs and restaurants by 2016.
